What is an Integer number?

  • Integer numbers are the numbers that can be positive, negative, or zero, but cannot be a fraction
  • The integers are generated from :
    • a set of counting numbers 1, 2, 3, . . .
    • And the operation of subtraction.
    • When a larger number is subtracted from a smaller number, the result is a negative number. Example: 2 – 6 = – 4

Integers Properties


  • Integers are positive & negative numbers including zero :

-∞ …………………….-3, -2, -1, 0, +1,+ 2,+ 3,+ 4,+ 5………………………… + ∞


  • If two integers are added the result is an integer number

    • Example: 2+3 = 5, addition of natural numbers 2 & 3 is a integer number 5
    • Example: (-2) + (-3) = -5, addition of two integers is a integer number -5

  • If two integers are multiplied the result is an integer number
    • Example: 2 x (-3) =-6, Multiplication of two integers is an integer -6

  • A set of natural numbers is typically denoted by the symbol Z

    • Z= {……-8,-7,-6, -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,……}

  • Discrete: For each integer, we have a next integer and a previous integer, but no in-between integer exists.

    • Example:
      • integer 5 – next integer is 6 & previous integer is 4
      • There is no integer in-between 5 & 6 or in-between 4 & 5
      •  Integer -5 – next integer is -4 & previous integer is -6
      • There is no integer in-between -4 & -5 or in-between -6 & -5
