Truck Tyre Wear & Defect Identification: Causes, Patterns and Root Causes

Tyre Wear – Causes and Root Cause Analysis

Tyre wear means the gradual loss or damage of the tyre tread and rubber during vehicle operation due to contact with the road.

For a truck, every rotation of the tyre creates friction between the tyre tread and road surface. Over time, the tread becomes thinner or develops an abnormal wear pattern.

For a Truck Field-Quality Investigation

I would group the causes into 5 major categories:

1. Tyre Pressure, tyre specification, tyre quality, tread depth, retread condition.
2. Wheel/Rim Rim punching, rim sinking, rim runout, wheel imbalance, wheel mounting.
3. Axle & Suspension Axle alignment, suspension bushes, springs, shock absorbers, wheel bearing.
4. Vehicle Operation Overloading, braking, acceleration, wheel digging, cornering and driving pattern.
5. Road Environment Potholes, rough roads, mud, sand, gravel and road camber.
RCA – Priority Checks Tyre pressure → Wheel alignment → Rim/wheel runout → Axle alignment → Suspension → Load → Braking → Operating/road conditions.

Factors Affecting Tyre Life

Following are the various factors affecting tyre life, to be considering during root cause establishment:
Issue / Condition Typical Cause Effect on Tyre Typical Tyre-Wear Pattern Severity / Relevance
Wheel Digging Wheel spin, high torque, soft/muddy terrain, high load Sliding between tyre and road Rapid tread/localized wear High
Rim Punching Pothole, kerb/stone impact, severe shock load Rim deformation affects tyre seating Irregular wear, possible bead damage Medium–High
Rim Sinking Severe impact, overload, wheel deformation Changes wheel geometry/runout One-sided/irregular wear High
Low Tyre Pressure Leakage, incorrect inflation, poor pressure maintenance Excessive tyre deflection and heat Shoulder wear Very High
High Tyre Pressure Over-inflation, incorrect pressure setting Reduced contact area Centre tread wear High
Wheel Alignment Error Incorrect toe/camber, axle misalignment Tyre scrubbing against road One-sided / feathered wear Very High
Wheel/Rim Runout Bent/deformed rim, improper mounting Uneven rotation Cupping / irregular wear High
Wheel Imbalance Uneven tyre/rim mass, improper balancing Repeated vertical vibration Cupping / scalloping Medium–High
Axle Misalignment Rear axle/thrust-angle issue, suspension geometry Tyre is forced to run at an angle Diagonal / one-sided wear Very High
Suspension Problem Worn/damaged spring, bush, shock absorber, U-bolt etc. Uneven wheel loading Irregular/cupping wear High
Overloading Excessive vehicle/axle load Increased tyre deflection and heat Rapid overall wear, shoulder wear Very High
Over-Braking / Brake Drag Brake adjustment or brake component issue Excessive heat and sliding Localized/rapid wear High
Wheel Locking Aggressive braking, brake imbalance Tyre slides instead of rolls Flat spot High
Differential / Driveline Issue Torque imbalance or driveline problem Uneven wheel torque/slip Irregular drive-axle wear Medium–High
Tyre Overheating Low pressure, overload, high speed, high ambient temperature Rubber degradation Accelerated wear, cracking High
Incorrect Tyre Fitment Wrong tyre size/specification or application Incorrect load/contact characteristics Abnormal/accelerated wear High
Mixed Tyre Sizes / Tread Depths Incorrect tyre pairing Different rolling circumference Uneven wear, driveline stress Medium–High
Retread / Tyre Quality Issue Poor retread bonding, casing condition, manufacturing defect Abnormal tread behaviour Localized/irregular wear Medium–High
Road Condition Potholes, rough roads, gravel, uneven surfaces High impact and abrasion Irregular/rapid wear High
Driving Behaviour Harsh acceleration, cornering, braking, overspeeding Increased slip and lateral forces Rapid/irregular wear High
Cornering / Lateral Scrub Sharp turns, high-speed cornering Lateral sliding of tyre Shoulder/edge wear Medium–High
Tyre Rotation Issue Rotation not performed when required Uneven wear remains concentrated Progressive uneven wear Medium
Improper Wheel Nut Torque Under/over-torquing, incorrect tightening sequence Wheel seating/runout problems Irregular wear + safety risk High
Wheel Bearing Issue Excessive play/preload, bearing damage Wheel movement/runout Irregular/one-sided wear High
Valve/Air Leakage Damaged valve, bead leak, puncture Gradual pressure loss Shoulder/overall accelerated wear High
